During the day I work over at Volcom in the art department. This summer there are a couple of shirts I drew up that are part of the Featured Artist line! I've been painting a series of PARTY WAVES at home on big 24"x24" pieces of wood, and I've adapted one into this LIFE IS EASY shirt. The wave is throwin a shaka while bringing along some of his favorite stuff (pizza, a can of YUM and a crazy fish). Life is easy is also the name of one of my favorite Reubens Accomplice songs, if you were wondering :)
There's also a DEEP SEA FISHING CLUB shirt, that was based off an old sketch of mine which featured a fish with a fishing pole, and it said "BE GOOD TO YOUR FRIENDS". The art then turned into the theme for Volcom's 2012 PEANUT BUTTER & RAIL JAM snowboard contest series... And then it was finally tweaked into DEEP SEA FISHING CLUB, where the old fisherman has a fish strung up, and his fish buddy seems to have caught a lost fisherman!
Down in my computer/music/art room, I've got a nice little turntable setup where I keep my vinyl collection. similar to my musical instruments down there, I like the kids to know they're welcome to play around down there and look through records, listen to 'em, and mess with knobs... as long as they're respectful :) I'm hoping that it helps instill an appreciate of music and record collecting when they get a little bigger.

this past weekend Cooper and I decided to celebrate Record Store Day with a trip into the craziness up to Fingerprints record store in Long Beach. Although we missed the complete craziness when the store opened up at 6am, we made it up around 4pm. Our good friend Robb was nice to enough to get us in to see Jimmy Eat World play an acoustic set.
We each decided to pick a record up to commemorate the day. I grabbed the new Kurt Vile LP, and I may have convinced Coop that the cover art on the Night Marchers / Mrs. Magician split 7" for Record Store Day was a good thing to grab.
Coop dug the first song Jimmy Eat World played, but was soon askin "are we gonna leave soon?" honestly, i'm just glad that he decided to go with me! so we grabbed our records, picked up a milkshake (a reward for being awesome, in addition to the 7" of course) and hit the road back home. Someday, when he's older it'll be cool to remind him... "remember when you were 5, and we went to go see Jimmy Eat World on Record Store Day?"

growing up in Southern California has had a few long lasting effects on me. I can't stay away from the beach, I could eat mexican food for just about every meal, aaaaaaand I'm a huge fan of just about everything John Reis, AKA Swami, AKA Speedo, etc. does. And what could be cooler but to share my love for one of his bands with my little dudes. Yep. Rocket from the Crypt is back with a new tune after about 7 years of quiet. They're one of a handful of awesome bands that are found on the new Yo Gabba Gabba: Music is Awesome, Vol 4 cd.
Rocket from the Crypt lends a new one (written by Adam Deibert of Yo Gabba, formerly of the Aquabats) called "He's A Chef". The video includes a rad cameo by Thomas Lennon (Reno 911, Wet Hot American Summer, the State). I'm a fan of it all. Also on the record are some killer tunes from Peter Bjorn & John, Belle & Sebastian, Mariachi El Bronx, Biz Markie, and a whole grip more. I've found these Yo Gabba cds have been huge in opening my little dudes up to other music. The Aquabats contributed a song called "Pool Party" to the Volume 2 cd, and now all the rest of the Aquabats cds are on rotation in the car on the way to school. Who knows, maybe tomorrow Rocket from the Crypt, tomorrow Drive Like Jehu? Check out the cd from Amazon right over heeeeeeeere. hey there and welcome to Getting Rad with Dad! my name is Patrick, and I entered the world of being a dad in 2007 when my wife Carolyn and I welcomed our son Cooper in this great big world. I never believed when people would tell me "your life is going to change.. completely" when you're a dad. life was already good, so what was that gonna mean? fortunately for me, they were right but in the best kind of way. it's amazing to explore the world through the eyes of my kids. oh yeah, we had another little boy named Charley Finn in 2011! Even before having kids, I've always wanted to walk the line of being the best dad I could be, while also being a great friend too. this blog is a documentation of that journey. not only is it a reminder to me and the little dudes of the things we've done, but also hopefully a reference to other rad dads. so here we go... the rad adventures, the rad gear we're playin with, the rad projects we're makin, rad music, kid-friends surf + skate spots... I'm 33 and have a kick-ass wife, Carolyn. We live in San Clemente, California. I work full-time as a graphic designer, play in afewbands when I have the time, and love to surf. Cooper is 5 years old, and Charley Finn is 1 (2 in May). They both dig skateboarding, ninjas, the Aquabats, milkshakes, Star Wars, and quesadillas.
